Diversity & Inclusion Policy
1. Our Commitment
At NHA Wire, we believe that diversity is not just a moral imperative—it is a journalistic necessity. To accurately report on a complex, multi-faceted world, our newsroom must reflect the world we cover.
We are committed to fostering an environment where differences are celebrated, where every employee feels valued and safe, and where our journalism amplifies voices that have historically been marginalized or ignored.
2. Diversity in the Workplace
We strive to build a workforce that represents a wide range of backgrounds, perspectives, and life experiences.
Inclusive Hiring: We actively seek to recruit talent from underrepresented groups across all levels of the organization, from interns to senior leadership. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.
Equitable Advancement: We are committed to pay equity and providing equal opportunities for mentorship, professional development, and promotion for all employees.
Safe Environment: We maintain a zero-tolerance policy for harassment, discrimination, or microaggressions in our newsrooms and bureaus. (See our Code of Conduct).
3. Diversity in Editorial Content
Our commitment to inclusion extends to the stories we tell and the sources we quote. A homogenized newsroom produces homogenized news; a diverse newsroom discovers the truth.
Source Diversity: We actively track the diversity of our sources. We strive to move beyond the “usual suspects” to include women, people of color, and experts from the Global South in our reporting on politics, business, and technology.
Story Selection: We are committed to covering communities that are often underreported or misrepresented by mainstream media. We aim to tell stories with these communities, not just about them.
Visual Representation: We ensure that the images and video footage we publish reflect the diversity of the human experience, avoiding stereotypes and caricatures.
4. Our Pillars of Inclusion
We focus our DEI efforts across several key areas:
Racial & Ethnic Diversity: Ensuring that our staff and our coverage reflect the racial makeup of the global population.
Gender Parity: Striving for a 50/50 gender balance in leadership roles and bylines.
LGBTQ+ Inclusion: creating a supportive environment for LGBTQ+ staff and ensuring fair, accurate coverage of LGBTQ+ issues.
Disability & Accessibility: Ensuring our digital platforms are accessible to all users and that our workplace accommodates employees with disabilities.
Socio-Economic Diversity: We value perspectives from all economic backgrounds, recognizing that class is often an overlooked barrier in the media industry.
5. Accountability
Good intentions are not enough. We hold ourselves accountable through:
Regular Audits: We conduct annual internal audits of our hiring data and editorial source diversity.
Training: All staff, including leadership, undergo mandatory Unconscious Bias and Inclusive Leadership training.
Employee Resource Groups (ERGs): We support staff-led groups that provide community and advocacy for underrepresented employees.
6. Contact Us
We welcome feedback from our readers and our community on how we can do better.
